Week two comes to an end!

It hardly seems possible we have been here two weeks already, but at the same time I am feeling so much more comfortable in my job that I feel I have been there more than just two weeks! I no longer get lost driving to work, and I can find almost any office in the embassy that I need!




The other day we explored a bit of our neighborhood, finally getting over to the mosque from which we hear the call to prayer. Almost all the mosques seem to have the same type of tower, with the main difference being if there is a metal emblem of some sort on the very top.

We also came across this BEAUTIFUL entrance way into someone's house! AND we found a candy shop! The blue is coated dark chocolate, the red have chocolate and nuts, and the wrapped are various nougats with nuts and/or fruit! Yummy!

Friday, July 22 2011 – As part of its summer cultural programming, U.S. Embassy Rabat is proud to welcome American astronaut Marsha Ivins, who will be giving presentations to young Moroccans on her experience as an astronaut and a woman scientist. From July 25-29, Ms. Ivins will be actively engaging with Moroccan youth aged 14 to 18 at a series of summer camps in Beni Mellal, El Jadida, Casablanca, Kenitra and Bouznika.

Ms. Ivins has had an impressive career with NASA in the United States, where she specialized in aerospace engineering. A veteran of five space flights aboard the Atlantis and Columbus shuttles, she has logged over 1,318 hours in space where she completed a series of highly complex aerospace engineering missions. She was then assigned to the Astronaut Office supporting the NASA Space Station and Constellation Branches before retiring in December 2010.

This initiative is part of U.S. Embassy Rabat’s broader summer programming aimed at promoting scientific learning among Moroccan youth. The summer Science Caravan, undertaken by experts from American NGO Grove of Hope, in partnership with 50 Moroccan teachers reached over 1,000 young Moroccans through scientific learning workshops. Moreover, following a very competitive process, a dozen young Moroccans with a special interest in science have benefitted from a week-long training program at the prestigious Space Camp in Huntsville, Alabama.
