One of the things that you're told straight-away when you start work in an embassy is that you are not allowed to take any pictures of the embassy. This is also true if you are in the military, as far as taking pictures of military installations. It's just common sense that "they" don't allow pictures of sensitive locations. So, it was a bit bizarre that I should get caught taking pictures of a Moroccan sensitive military installation!!
It happened while we were on our trip to Tangier. Just up from our hotel was a light house on Cap Spartel. It was easy to find the right road because there were signs showing the way. We actually hadn't gone too far when this lighthouse-shaped structure appeared in the trees.
Not knowing what to expect a Moroccan lighthouse to look like, we assumed this was it; so when we got up around the corner, we pulled over and went to the gate (locked) to see it. Since we couldn't get in, I just took a bunch of pictures from the gate and the road. Since the road we were on was somewhat narrow, I decided to drive further up the hill to find a safe turn-around spot. That's when we came to the end of the road and.......
We couldn't get up into this one either, but it was so much more obviously a lighthouse!
We headed back the way we had come, and as we neared the misinterpreted installation, a very courteous French-speaking soldier insisted we pull over and then wanted to see my camera. He made me delete each picture of whatever this place was before he would let us go on our way! I wonder what he thought since our license plates indicate we are from the US Embassy!!
